Police complaint lodged against Mahiti Ghar for exorbitant illegal fees

A complaint has been today filed at the Panaji Police Station by Adv. Aires Rodrigues against the illegal and unauthorized services being provided at the Mahiti Ghar opposite the Collector Office at Panaji

For change of name the Mahiti Ghar is charging Rs. 3000+ while the official fee is only Rs 36. While the official fee for a Marriage registration is Rs 100 the Mahiti Ghar is charging Rs. 3000+. The official fee for a Succession deed is upto a maximum of Rs 500 but the Mahiti Ghar is charging Rs 2000+. Though there is no fee charged for a Court marriage the Mahiti Ghar is charging RS. 5000+ .

In his complaint to the police, Adv. Aires Rodrigues has stated that though the Mahiti Ghar is only permitted to furnish copies of land record documents that it was in rank violation advertising and
providing a host of other government services it was not entitled to.

Adv. Rodrigues has given the police details of the exorbitant fees being charged for some of the services as against the official fees being charged at the Civil cum Sub registrar offices. The complaint stated that the services were being illegally advertised and provided from a government premises was aclear act of cheating the public.

Adv. Rodrigues has stated that the public are being misled to presume that the Mahiti Ghar being official and so are the fees.

Adv. Rodrigues has sought immediate action to stop this illegality and also action against the persons running this illegal activity at the Mahiti Ghar.
